Dentures need daily care, just like natural teeth. Keeping them clean protects your gums, your breath and your general health.
Daily cleaning routine
- Rinse after eating to remove food particles. Do this over a sink filled with water or a folded towel in case you drop them.
- Brush gently with a soft denture brush and mild soap or a denture cleaner. Avoid hard brushes and ordinary toothpaste.
- Clean your mouth. Brush gums, tongue and the roof of the mouth with a soft brush.
- Soak overnight in water or a denture-cleaning solution, following the product directions.
- Rinse well before putting them back in.
Handling and storage
- Never use hot or boiling water, which can warp them
- Avoid bleach unless specifically advised
- Keep them moist when not worn, as drying can change their shape
- Store safely, away from children and pets
Denture adhesive
A small amount can help stability, but needing more and more is a sign that the fit has changed. Clean it off thoroughly each day and ask your dentist for a review rather than relying on adhesive.
Common problems
- Sore spots: a rubbing area needs a simple adjustment. Do not try to file it yourself.
- Loose fit: gums and bone change shape over time, so relining or new dentures may be needed.
- Bad breath or white patches: may be a fungal infection (denture stomatitis) and needs treatment. Also see what causes bad breath.
- Cracks or chips: do not glue them at home; have them repaired.
Regular check-ups
Even with full dentures, see your dentist at least once a year to check your gums, the fit and your mouth for any changes, including screening for oral cancer. Learn more about our denture services, or explore other ways to replace teeth.
