A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root, topped with a crown that looks and works like a natural tooth. Implants are a long-term way to replace missing teeth without relying on neighbouring teeth for support, and suitability is decided after a clinical examination and imaging.
If you recognise any of these, a short examination is the best way to find out what is happening and what, if anything, you need.
Examination, X-rays or scans assess bone, gums and general health to decide if implants suit you.
The position, number and type of implants are planned, along with any preparatory treatment needed.
The implant is placed under local anaesthesia and left to integrate with the bone.
Over the following months the bone bonds to the implant, forming a stable foundation.
A custom crown is attached, shaped and coloured to blend with your natural teeth.
Most healthy adults with sufficient bone and healthy gums can be considered. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and untreated gum disease can affect success. Only a clinical examination can confirm suitability.
Placement is performed under local anaesthesia. Some soreness and swelling for a few days afterwards is normal and is usually manageable with the medicines your dentist recommends.
With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, implants can last many years. The crown on top may need replacement sooner due to normal wear.
Bridges and removable dentures are alternatives. Each has different advantages, and your dentist can compare them for your situation.
