If a chipped, gapped, uneven or stained tooth bothers you, there are two common ways to improve it without braces or crowns: dental bonding and veneers.

What is dental bonding?

Tooth-coloured composite resin is applied to the tooth, sculpted to shape, hardened with a light and polished. It is often completed in one visit, usually needs little or no tooth removal and can be done without anaesthetic for minor repairs.

Best for: small chips, minor gaps, small shape changes and covering localised marks.

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin shells, usually porcelain or ceramic, made in a laboratory and bonded to the front of the teeth. A thin layer of enamel is generally removed first. They typically take two visits, with a temporary version in between where needed.

Best for: multiple teeth, stubborn discolouration, uneven shapes or sizes, and more comprehensive smile makeovers.

Side-by-side

  • Visits: bonding, often one; veneers, usually two or more.
  • Tooth preparation: bonding, minimal or none; veneers, a small amount of enamel is removed.
  • Appearance: both can look natural; porcelain is more stain-resistant and has a lifelike gloss.
  • Durability: porcelain is generally longer-lasting; bonding is easier to repair.
  • Reversibility: bonding is more conservative; veneers are not reversible.
  • Cost: bonding is typically less expensive up front; veneers cost more.

Who may not be suitable?

Active decay, gum disease, heavy grinding or a very small amount of enamel may make cosmetic treatment unsuitable until these are addressed. If you grind your teeth, see bruxism.

Caring for either

Brush and clean between teeth well, avoid biting hard objects, and limit staining foods. Attend regular check-ups. If your main concern is colour alone, whitening may be enough.
