Many adults live with crowded, gapped or misaligned teeth because they assume braces are only for teenagers. In reality, a growing share of orthodontic patients are adults.

Why straighten teeth as an adult?

  • Easier cleaning. Crowded teeth trap plaque, raising the risk of cavities and gum disease.
  • A healthier bite. Better alignment can reduce uneven wear and strain on teeth.
  • Confidence. Many adults simply want a smile they feel happy with.
  • Preparing for other treatment. Aligning teeth can make crowns, bridges or implants more successful.

Options for adults

  • Ceramic braces, less visible than metal
  • Metal braces, efficient and economical
  • Clear aligners, discreet and removable. See braces vs aligners.
  • Lingual braces, fixed behind the teeth, in selected cases

What needs checking first

  1. Gum health. Gum disease must be treated first. See gum disease stages.
  2. Cavities. Any decay should be filled before braces.
  3. Bone support and X-rays. To make sure teeth can be safely moved.
  4. Existing dental work. Crowns, bridges and implants can limit movement.

How long does it take?

Treatment commonly takes one to two years or more depending on the case. Adult bone is denser than a teenager’s, so movement may be slower. Your dentist will give you an estimate after assessing your teeth.

Living with braces

Clean thoroughly after meals, use interdental brushes and avoid very hard or sticky foods. Keep up regular hygiene visits. When treatment ends, wear retainers as advised. See retainers.
